Direct vs Reported speech

Yesterday, Fei and Jerry met in the cafè while their staying in China. Fei said hello to Jerry. Jerry apologised because he hadn’t heard her. Fei thought Jerry was really lost and asked if he was sleeping. Jerry claimed he was just thinking. Fei asked Jerry what he was thinking about. Jerry answered he would be going back home to visit his family for a couple of weeks. Fei thought Jerry was thinking about how happy he would be to see them again. Jerry claimed that was true, but he also said he was worried about what kinds of gifts he should bring from China. Fei told him to bring them something typical and traditional from there, so she suggested bringing Chinese kites. Jerry thought it was a brilliant idea so he thanked Fei for her help.

Fei: You were really lost in thought. Or were you sleeping?
Jerry: No, I wasn't sleeping, just thinking.
Fei: About what?
Jerry: Well, I'll be going back home to visit my family for a couple of weeks.
Fei: So, you are thinking about how happy you'll be to see them again.
Jerry: Yes, that's true. But I'm also thinking about what kinds of gifts I should bring from China for everyone.
Fei: You should bring them something typical and traditional from here. How about some Chinese kites?
Jerry: Hey, that's a brilliant idea! Thank you for your help.
